Who was Sigmund Freud?

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian scholar, and psychiatrist who was best known for developing and creating theories of the mind.

Childhood

Sigmund Freud was born in the Czech Republic which was originally known as Freiberg, on May 6, 1856.His parents were Jewish, and his father was a wool merchant. It was a large family of 8, and they all lived in a rented room in the house of a locksmith. But when when Sigmund turned four, he and his family moved to Vienna. Sigmund was a very intelligent child, in fact at the age of nine he was already attending a prominent high school called Leopoldstädter Kommunal-Realgymnasium. As a child he loved literature, and he was fluent in eight languages. Greek, Latin, Hebrew, German, Italian, French, Spanish and English.

Career

After graduating from the university of Vienna Sigmund started his medical career at the Vienna General Hospital in 1882. But it was his job as a doctor in an asylum that sparked his interest in clinical work. After his job in the hospital, Sigmund began a private practice of treating psychological disorders. One of Sigmund's greatest influences in his study was Brentano, who discussed the theory of the unconscious mind, which he did no believe in. Sigmund on the other hand did. One of Freud's greatest beliefs was psychoanalysis which is sort of like hypnosis. Psychoanalysis is where you can analyze dreams to find the meaning and want of the unconscious part of the mind.

Controversial Work

Even though Sigmund was known for psychoanalysis he also did a lot of research of sexuality, and he even wrote a essay called the Theory of Sexuality. Many people during this time found his essays and publication very scandalous and overplayed.

My Reaction

Before researching Sigmund Freud I thought he was going to be an outstanding psychiatrist, who mostly worked on the unconscious part of the mind. But now after looking into the some of the stuff he said, and wrote, I think he's a little coo-coo for coco puffs. Also his depression and the dreams that he has also says a lot about him. Though, I do believe in what he was saying about the unconscious part of the human mind, and how we can analyze our dreams and link them to our desires.
