Make a big circle

Let's Dive in

It's gonna get real and I really want you to be candid, truthful, straightforward, sincere.

So here's what we know:

1). You were chosen based on the qualities and abilities that make you a good leader

2). The lead role has shifted from being focused on the process to relationship...with the belief that the state of the relationship +/- productivity and goal outcomes.

3). It's not always rosy. People are complex creatures.

4). Nothing happens overnight!

5). Great support at WD!!! PM, D.O. Kris Holgerson, Debi Barnes, Dez, Helen, your EDCs...this list goes on!!!

Defining Engagement & Compassion

Employee Engagement:
Kevin Kruse says EE is the EMOTIONAL COMMITMENT the employee has to the organization and it's goals.

DE is the magic dust that makes EE come alive.
Discretionary Effort is the "extra" ordinary function we bring to our daily work.

Compassion:
Tyler Henry says Compassion is being able to identify others within ourselves and ourselves within ourselves.

So how can we use one to grow and increase the other?

But first, let's conduct an experiment.

Closing the Circle

Make another big circle
So, I want to see how much employee engagement and compassion you all have circulating in your office?

Other theme that might be drawn out in this activity:
-employee attitudes
-office culture
-challenges

Although our goal isn't to be focused on these things today, it's important to notice some of the barriers to positive EE.

ANECDOTES

Nail polish
- Kristen Simmons worked as a "DA" for a day in CDA. She took time out of her hectic schedule to be among the team. An employee (who no longer works here) approached the PM..."Corinne, Kristen Simmons is wearing nail polish!!!". I was there and overheard the conversation. I jumped in quickly and said, "well, can I tell you a secret?" to the employee. The employee nodded, as if I was about to share some gossip. I said in a whisper, "did you know she's actually human"? The employee looked at me like, "yeah, I know that" and followed the look by saying, "well it is company policy". I continued by saying, "I think it's important to focus on the fact that she's here helping because she cares about each one of you and each one of our patients." That's what matters. "I'm pretty sure you've worn nail polish before and you still have a job". Compassion is find a way to understand people's circumstances.

From the PMs chair
- an employee came to me one day, very frustrated and said, "how come you think so highly of everyone here? You rarely show disgust or

Engagement

the good, the bad and the indifferent
What kind of engagement was depicted in the videos?

increasing discretionary effort (the above & beyond stuff) "magic dust" to making our place of work better for us...and our patients!

Its about capturing their heads & their hearts

*Actively engaged team members are the greatest source of creativity, innovation, quality and improvements within an organization.

So....who's job is it to manage it?

All our jobs as leaders. Because, if it's not you...it's them!

Think of it like a car or a horse, It's driving you or you're driving it...and if you let it drive you, who knows where it will take you?!

Engagement feeds the culture of your team!
