LOUISIANA PURCHASE / LEWIS & CLARK

  • The US acquired the Louisiana purchase by buying it from France.
  • Livingston and James Monroe accepted the offer. Sold for 15 million dollars.
  • Meriwether Lewis was Jeffersons private secretary
  • Clark was the expeditions co leader.
  • He was 32 years old and a friend of Lewis in the military

LEWIS AND CLARK

  • Chosen to make an expedition to the Louisiana purchase so the US could explore newly bought land.
  • Sacagwea was there guide. She was a young Shoshone woman.
  • They had recorded valuable information on people, plants, animals and the geography of the West.
  • Helped the US lay claim to the northern region between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean

SECOND GREAT AWAKENING & AUTHOR

  • The second great awakening was a religious revival.
  • Had a powerful influence on the growth of democracy of religion
  • Washington Irving was one of the authors from the second great awakening.
  • Wrote "Rip Van" & "The Legends of the Sleeping Hollow"

ARTISTS OF SECOND GREAT AWAKENING

  • George Caleb was one of the artists from the second great awakening
  • Some of the things he painted were fur traders, riverboat workers and political speakers

ARCHITECTS/ LIFE ON SOUTHERN PLANTATIONS

  • American architects developed their buildings based on the styles of ancient Greek and Romans.
  • Southerners lived on large plantations that were widely seperated from each other.
  • The souths economy depended on slavery and growing cash crops

LIFE IN NORTHERN CITIES

  • Had small industries that made products like textiles, shoes & metal goods.
  • Merchants and business people controlled urban economic and social life.

MUSICIAN OF THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING

  • Stephen C. Foster was a musician of the second great awakening
  • He combined African and Europe music to create southern music
