Causes

  • loss of brain cells in the hypothalamus
  • death of hypocretins
  • variation in the gene HLA-DQB1*6:02
hypothalamus- middle central part of brain

hypocretins- chemicals produced in the brain which regulate the daily sleep and wake cycle

Symptoms

  • excessive daytime sleepiness
  • cataplexy
  • hallucinations
  • leg jerks
  • sleep paralysis
-eds- during driving, conversation, eating, even w a full nights sleep

-cataplexy- a sudden loss of muscle tone, causing slurred speech or buckling of the knees

-hallucinations- dream like experiences that incorporate ones real environment

-Sleep paralysis is the inability to move during sleep

Treatments

  • stimulants
  • antidepressants
  • behavioral therapy or reference to a sleep center
stimulants to keep you awake

antidepressants help with cataplexy and sleep paralysis

behavioral therapy includes getting enough sleep, no stimulating foods (caffeine, chocolate, etc.) before bed, sleep in a quiet dark place, take frequent naps during the day, sometimes aromatherapy is suggested

Cures

  • unfortunately, narcolepsy does not have a cure
