THE ATTACK

  • Just before 8:00 - lasted for 2 hours
  • December 7, 1941
  • Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attcked naval base
  • More than 2000 American soldiers/sailors died.
  • Japanese plan: destroy the Pacific Fleet so they would be able to fight back.

What led to the event?

The US was unhappy because Japan was expanding and taking over China. America responded by cutting of trade which led to the attack.

The Japanese destroyed 20 naval vessels, including 8 enormous battleships and about 200 airplanes.
- This led congress to declare war on Japan and eventually causing America to join WW11

"No man can tame a tiger into a kitten by stroking it. There can be no appeasement with ruthlessness. There can be no reasoning with an incendiary bomb. We know now that a nation can have no peace with the Nazis only at the price of total surrender." -FDR
