A LITTLE BACKGROUND

Tibet is an area with very high altitude. This creates a very short lifespan for those who inhabit it.

This is why Tibetans explore the depths of life after death.

Untitled Slide

The author of the book describes Tibetan monks as psychonauts. This is simply "a voyager into the soul who voluntarily abandons the pseudo-security of this planet of delusion" to venture into the depths of their own mind.
(p 269)

Before we look at how Tibetans deal with death we must first examine ourselves.

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS AFTER THIS LIFE?

Untitled Slide

When non religious people think of death they tend to think of an all encompassing nothingness.

"Nothing is categorically unimaginable, so it is incorrect to picture nothing as a destination." (p 24)

DEATH, KARMA, AND REINCARNATION

After death is considered the ultimate "between" state because a person's actions in this time determine their next form.

The Six Betweens
1.) Life 2.) Dream
3.) Trance
4.) Death point
5.) Reality 6.) Existence

3 LEVELS OF AWARENESS

"The gross body is the body of flesh, blood, bone, and other substances."
(p 35)

"The subtle body roughly corresponds to what we think of a central nervous system. It is not as much the brain matter of the system as it is the pattern structuring it into a vessel of experience." (p 36)

"The extremely subtle body is called the indestructible drop; it is a tiny pattern exiting normally only in the center of the heart wheel or complex." (p 36)

LUCID DREAMING

IS THE FIRST STEP TO MASTERING THE BODIES

Lucid dreaming is having awareness while in a dream. A person is actively able to change the outcome of the dream.

TYPES OF MEDITATION

Calming Meditation:
Also called one-pointedness. The objective is to disidentify from thoughts and emotions.

Those who meditate do it to "improve your ability to monitor your mind, to use it effectively to concentrate on something, and to develop more control of emotions and reactions."
(p 55)

Insight Meditation:
"Use the calmed and focused mind to better understand reality, the environment, and the self."
(p 55)

Therapeutic Meditation:
"Intended to condition your mind to a positive orientation."
(p 56)

Imaginative Meditation:
"Visualizations of positive places or events, which can be most useful in developing openness to the unprecedented situations one may face at death."
(p 56)

NIRVANA

Nirvana is the ultimate form of enlightenment. It can only be achieved between death and rebirth.

In my opinion fear of death is the biggest obstacle that we face in our lifetimes. Death is the great unknown.

The best way to prepare for death is through the help of a spiritual teacher or Guru. We will have our own personal Guru in a few minutes.
