PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT WAS THE DEAL IN IMPERIAL RUSSIA

INTELLECTUALLY?

When Peter the Great was ruler, he enforced a policy of rapid modernization because of his appreciation toward modern science. He made Russian industries based on advanced science and technology.

Catherine the Great was in favor of Peter's policy of westernization. She appointed officials with a modern,Western European-style education. Catherine highly respected the Western Europe lands, and became infatuated with the philosophies of the Enlightenment, specifically the philosopher Denis Diderot.

Peter sought out technical experts who were willing to work abroad, during his tour of Western Europe. He brought approximately 1,000 engineers, shipbuilders, military officers, teachers, and industrial specialists to Russia.

Catherine greatly encouraged Russian literature. This led to the emergence of the unofficial intellectual class known as intelligentsia. They gained recognition by influencing public opinion and state policy. They communicated through "thick journals" in which monthly news about philosophy, science and art was spread.

The intellectual experimentation in Russia end because of the French Revolution and the policies of westernization lost imperial sponsorship.
