Deponent Verbs

  • Comes from the  latin words "de" and "pono"
  • Literally means to put aside
  • They "put aside" their active endings
  • Usually has 3 passive p.p. translated actively
  • The 2nd p.p. determines conjugation

Congugations

  • 1st - Has a long "a" sound
  • 2nd - Has a long "e" sound
  • 3rd - Has a short "e" sound
  • 3rd io - Has short "e" and ior
  • 4th - Has long "I" and ior

Examples

  • 1st - Loquor, Loqui, Locutus Sum - Talk
  • 2nd - Conor, Conari, Conatus Sum - Try
  • 3rd - Vereor, Vereri, Veritus Sum - Fear
  • 3rd io - Regredior, Regredi, Regressus Sum - Return
  • 4th - Experior, Experiri, Expertus Sum - Test

Declining Deponents 1st/2nd

  • 1st person, singular = 1st p.p., plural = stem + mur
  • 2nd person, singular = stem + ris, plural = stem + mini
  • 3rd person, singular = stem + tur, plural = stem + ntur
  • To get the stem take the 2nd p.p. and subtract the "ri"      
  • EX) conor, conaris, conatur, conamur, conamini, conantur

Declining deponents 3rd/4th

  • 1st person singular = 1st p.p.
  • 2nd person singular = 2nd p.p. - "i" + "e" + ris
  • 3rd person singular through 2nd person plural
  • 2nd p.p. + tur, mur, or mini
  • 3rd person plural, stem + u + ntur

Declining Continued

  • imperfect = stem + ba + passive ending
  • future 1st/2nd = same except instead of ba, use bo, bi, bu
  • future 3rd/4th = same except instead of ba, use "a" and "e"
  • pluperfect = 3rd p.p. - sum + eram, eras, erat, eramus, eratis, erant
  • future perfect = 3rd p.p. - sum + ero, eris, erit, erimus, eritis, erunt

Examples

  • present = verertur = he fears
  • imperfect = verebatur = he feared
  • future = verebitur = he will fear
  • pluperfect = veritus erat= he had feared
  • future perfect = veritus erit = he will have feared
