  • vegetative reproduction

Runners or Rhyzomes

  • a stem or root heading out
  • establishes a bud where the plant continues to group.
  • damage to the runner means a new plant
  • strawberries, poplar

Budding

  • growing from buds on a stem
  • ginger, onions, spider plants

Cutting

  • use a piece or fragment of the parent to create a daughter
  • water, soil, growth hormones as stimuli

Layering

  • When a stem touches the ground and produces roots.
  • See grapes
  • Air layering -- moss is used to stimulate root growth

Tubers & Bulbs

  • bulbs that when separated will produce a new plant
  • daffodils
  • underground fat stem
  • stem full of starch for rapid growth (bulb)
  • Tuber's food remains in bass of stem
