History of Square Enix

The Beginning of Squaresoft

  • Squaresoft was started by Masafumi Miyamato who was the son of a major electrical construction company of Dun-Ya-Sha in 1983 in Yokohama, Japan
  • Got his two first programmers: Hironobuchi Sakaguchi and Hiromichi Tanaka in 1983 by a computer cafe that Masafumi made.
  • Left from Den-Ya-Sha in August 1986
  • First Games are Death Trap and its sequel Will and also was a porter of Pc to the Nes
  • Hired Nobuo Uemastu in the 80's by composing for all their games from then on.
  • It was thanks to Final Fantasy that would save the Company.

The Beginning of Enix

  • Enix was started by Yasuhiro Fukashima in 1975
  • Hired Akita Toriyama for Dragon Quest
  • Was Originally a Publishing Company and was called Eidansha Boshu Service Center.

Major Events in Square and Enix

  • Square Get a studio in Ueno, Tokyo in the 1987
  • Square Moved from the Nintendo Consoles to Sony in 1994.
  • While Enix moved and still published on Sony in 1997
  • Squaresoft collabrating with Disney in the early 2000's

The Merger

  • The merger was caused by the failed movie known as FF: The spirits within in April 2001 that bombed so hard that Square was risking majorlosses.
  • Enix resisted the merger at first since Square was losing money thanks to the spirits within.
  • It was until Sony came in and gave Square enough to get back their losses/acquire a bit of Square that Enix came in and joined them.
  • This is how is Square and Enix mergered in 2003.
