How about paper?

yes, real paper.
We will use computers and iPads plenty in this class, but the first five minutes of class are reserved for the classic act of connecting pen or pencil to paper.

Great.

then you are ready...

to...
Write away!
(right Away.
Every Day.)

An ''a'' a day:

  • present
  • prepared
  • participating
We'll use these few minutes every day to check homework, preparation, and attendance. It is also valuable time to prime our brains for the kind of thinking we'll be doing in class.

(Could be preparing for a discussion, reviewing a "big idea" from the reading, introducing a new idea, or practicing a skill.)

Will we grade what you write? No, but we will reward your effort: goes under the category of "participation and preparation."

All that matters is that you keep writing until you hear the bell.

Keep elaborating. Be specific. Expand, review, just don't set down your pencil.

Community
Courage
compassion

we aren't one yet.  But we will be.

what do COMmunication and COMmunity have in COMmon?

The root "COM" means "together."

What separates a community from just a place? How does it feel to belong to a community?

How should we communicate when we are together so this class feels like a community and not just a place?

How does it feel when the "exchange" part of communication isn't happening?

Have you ever been talking to someone and you just know they're not listening?

(example?) (demonstrate?)

How can you tell? How does that feel?

Have you ever been talking and someone else just interrupts right in the middle and steamrolls over what you were saying?

How does that feel?

Or if they are judging you harshly (not believing you, disagreeing, etc.)

What about the opposite? How can you tell when someone is REALLY listening to you?

How does that feel?

What basic ground rules should we have in this class for communicating that will help us build a good community?

communication

what is it? Different forms? why does it matter?
Communication:

what: exchanging information or ideas.

Look at the word "exchange": an act of giving something and receiving something in return.

different forms:
non-verbal (physical, visual)
verbal (spoken, written)

speaking/listening
writing/reading

Why important?

thoughts and feelings are invisible. Communication allows us to share them with others, and feel understood. It is how we learn (and build), how we connect (to people in present, or across time and distance), how we feel part of a community.

Let's practice.

REALLY LISten.  DOn't interrupt. Don't just ''wait to talk.''
In partners, one person talks, the other only listens. You can nod, and say "uh-huh" etc. but you can't say, "That reminds me of..."

then switch....
