THE GHETTOS

Malori Koenig P.2

WHAT ARE THE GHETTOS

  • the ghettos were the parts of the city that were poor , so the jews were trapped/forced in this confined space .
  • It was a way to separate the Jews from the non-Jews so that the Nazis could easily transport/keep track of the Jews.
  • Ghettos were a poor housing system for Jews during World War II "Quartering Jews " .

CONDITIONS IN THE GHETTOS

  • The Jews could only bring limited amount of belongings to the camps. Which made the problem of poverty and starvation even bigger.
  • An average of 7 to 10 people had to share a room because of the limited space. The rooms were disgusting and filled with the vermin.
  • With the jews being so close/ compacted together, diseases were easily contracted . For example, typhus wiped out half of the ghettos population.

THE UP RISING

  • Hitler had wanted to get rid of all ghetto camps, and illuminate all the Jews. Word had gone out to the Jews living in the ghettos would start in "the uprising."
  • With in the Warsaw ghetto camp a team name the Z.O.B was formed to try and defend the jews .
  • Z.O.B was led by 23-year-old Mordecai Anielewicz.
  • The goal was to try to keep Jews from going on the trains.
  • While they were planning their attack on the Nazis they manage to get their hands on a few guns and made homemade grenades.

LIQUIDATION

  • The attacks lasted January 18- 21 . On the 22nd the Jews were back on schedule for the trains
  • The ghettos were completely destroyed, and the buildings that were still there were bombed by the Nazis to try and kill or find hiding Jews.
  • The jews were sent to the concentration camps except for the people/Jews that could be useful to the German army.
  • In conclusion even though that the concentration camps were into sized more than the ghettos there still just as important.
