Reflections

  • Over the past 20 years of my teaching career, I've discovered one universal truth: the one constant in education is change. However, my core belief has always centered on the child.

Reflections

  • "It takes a village" K is a time of new beginnings. A time for parents to share the wealth of knowledge and their image of their child. A time for me to get to know the child
  • Colleagues: supportive and encouraging along the way
  • Documenting the process: report
  • Trust and jump right in

Wonderings

100 languages of children

a hundred worlds to discover, to invent, to dream

Capacities

  • Explore contexts and environments that support and respond to learner's needs:
  • Engage in dialogue with family and community to deepen an understanding of children as citizens: gain trust of parents to engage in deeper or more difficult conversations and make connections

Explore

  • give time to explore the possibilities
  • value the process of learning rather than focusing on the end product

Share what we care about

"Look what We built":

  • The typical buildings and towers were being built until one day, Mason created a winding path complete with ramps and tunnels. This caught on and soon we had mazes running under tables around corners and into the classroom next door. Everyone was included. Everyone's ideas were heard and valued. Everyone respected the amount of time and effort this took. I was impressed with just how carefully they worked being careful not to bump what was built and when accidents occurred, they were quickly fixed and no one got upset.

Next steps

  • Field Study: How can I create an outdoor learning environment that engages all students?
  • Documentation: Capturing the child's learning
