What you are doing is amazing, what your students are creating & learning is amazing, what we do here at school is amazing. And more people need to know about it!

If we don't share the positives, the negatives will take over.

A positive digital footprint is better than a negative one, and also better than NO footprint!

We need to go where they are.

We need to go where kids and parents are: digitally. Kids are online more and younger, and so are their parents.

Culture of sharing

Our kids are creating their own social media feeds, YouTube channels, etc. This isn't a bad thing: They already have a culture of sharing!
Parents too!

Parents go online to research schools when actively choosing a
school ... and to gather information about a school or track its progress.

Parents seek information and guidance from multiple sources to inform their school choice process.

We need all hands on deck.

It's not just a marketing department thing.

Twitter Basics

Do a demo of Twitter. Many of these instructions/tips could be applied to other tools, such as Instagram.

Twitter Basics

  • Accounts vs. Hashtags
  • How to use a hashtag
  • Creating an account
  • How to use a hashtag
  • Cross posting

Bonus:
Social media can help you find resources and grow professionally.

With a hashtag, parents and students can share too.

We will informally advertise #GriffinShowcase and hope that parents and students eventually catch on.
Eventually, when someone says “oh that school does this” in a bad way, parents etc. can say “actually they don’t- have you seen what they do on FB or Twitter” etc.?

If you're thinking: This isn't for me

  • Could your students share work online?
  • Could you create a classroom account?
  • Let others know when you're doing something special.
  • Get photos to Alicia for sharing.
Make sure Joan knows at least 1 day in advance about special activities, so she can take pictures and share. Or if you know another teacher in your division or department shares online, ask them to take pictures and share.

Examples of those activities would be hands-on classroom projects, special guests in the classroom, project/report sharing, cross-grade things like reading buddies, etc. We actually even want to get those on the calendar, but at the minimum, both Adrianne and Joan should know in advance.

What?

What to share? What not to share?
Best practices for sharing online.

Photo Sharing Best Practices

  • DO share photos & videos of student work
  • DO share photos & videos of kids learning
  • DON'T put names of kids next to their photo
  • DON'T put last names of kids, or other identifying information
  • DON'T use images of students on our "do not photo" list (coming soon)
  • DON'T wait for a "perfect" opportunity to share: share much and share often!

What do kids DO that makes your school great?

How would you answer this question if someone you just met in the grocery store line? In addition to the suggested items on your card, think about what kids DO here. That's what you should be sharing on social media.
