Impromptu speaking

  • Impromptu speaking is a type of speech delivered with little or no preparation. The speaker is given a topic, question, or situation and must think of what to say and respond immediately.

Characteristics

  • Little or no preparation- The speaker has limited time to prepare.
  • Spontaneous- The ideas are formed while speaking.
  • Quick thinking- The speaker needs to think and organize ideas quickly.
  • Focused- The response should stay on the given topic.
  • Natural delivery- It usually sounds like normal conversation.

PURPOSE

  • Answer unexpected question
  • Express an opinion
  • Explain an idea
  • Share an experience
  • Participate in discussion
  • Respond to unexpected situation

Basic Parts of an Impromptu Speech

  • Introduction – Introduces the topic and gives the main idea.
  • Body – Provides reasons, explanations, examples, or supporting ideas.
  • Conclusion – Summarizes the main idea and gives a clear ending.

PREP Method

  • P – Point: State your main idea. R – Reason: Explain why you think so. E – Example: Give an example to support your reason. P – Point: Repeat or summarize your main idea.
  • Example: Topic: “Is education important?” Point: Education is important in our lives. Reason: It gives us knowledge and useful skills. For example, students develop skills that can help them in their future careers. Point: Therefore, education is important because it helps prepare us for the future.

Common Types/Situation

  • Question-and-answer – Giving an immediate answer to a question.
  • Opinion-based – Giving your personal opinion about a topic.
  • Experience-based – Sharing an experience or lesson.
  • Explanation-based – Explaining a concept or idea.
  • Situational – Responding to a particular situation or problem.

SKILLS NEEDED

  • Quick thinking – To develop ideas immediately.
  • Good communication – To express ideas clearly.
  • Organization – To arrange ideas logically.
  • Confidence – To speak despite nervousness.
  • Listening skills – To understand the question or topic correctly.
  • Good delivery – To use an appropriate voice, eye contact, and body language.

Advantages

  • Improves confidence – You become more comfortable speaking in front of people.
  • Develops quick thinking – You learn to form and organize ideas quickly.
  • Improves communication – You practice expressing your thoughts clearly.
  • Useful in real life – People often need to answer unexpected questions or explain something immediately.

Challenges

  • Nervousness – Being called unexpectedly can make you anxious.
  • Limited preparation – You have little time to organize your ideas.
  • Forgetting ideas – Nervousness may make it difficult to remember what you want to say.
  • Going off-topic – Without a structure, you may talk about unrelated ideas.
  • Lack of confidence – You may worry about making mistakes.

Tips for Effective Impromptu Speaking

  • PAUSE → THINK → ORGANIZE → SPEAK → CONCLUDE
  • Pause – Take a short moment to think.
  • Understand – Make sure you understand the topic or question.
  • Choose your main point – Decide what you want to say.
  • Organize – Think of 2–3 supporting ideas or use PREP.
  • Speak clearly – Use a natural and confident voice.
  • Conclude – End by summarizing your main point.

Impromptu vs. Other Speech Delivery

  • Impromptu- Little or no preparatiion.
  • Extemporaneous- Prepared and practiced but not memorized word-for-word.
  • Manuscript- A fully written speech that is read.
  • Memorized- A speech that is prepared and memorized.
