RED AlGAE

  • Multicellular seaweeds
  • Divers have found it 260 meters below ocean's surface
  • Agar and carrageenan are extracted from red algae
  • These are used in foods such as ice cream and products like hair conditioner
  • Nutritional food in Asian culture (can be fried, dried, or toasted)

BROWN ALGAE

  • Most of the time they are called seaweed
  • They have brown,green,yellow,and orange pigments
  • Plant like structures
  • They have gas filled sacs called bladders that allow the algae to float upright in the ocean
  • Some people eat brown algae
  • Algins are extracted from brown algae and used as thickener in pudding and other foods
