  • Status: 3rd President of Egypt and apart of the Democratic Party
  • Born: December 25 1918, El Monufia Egypt
  • Died: October 6 1981 (aged 62), Cairo Egypt
  • Nationality: Egyptian

BACKGROUND

  • ARAB-ISRAELI WARS
  • 1948: Palestine War
  • 1967: Six Day War
  • 1973: Yom Kippur War

1979 EGYPT-ISRAEL PEACE TREATY

  • Signed in Washington D.C., United States, on March 26 1979.
  • The result of Camp David Accords
  • Main motive to bring peace among the Arab States

THE ASSASSINATION

  • During celebration of Operation Badr (1973) victory parade in Cairo
  • Undertaken by members of an Egyptian Islamic Jihad
  • Sadat was heavily covered by guards and sercurity as potential attack was feared
  • Hit around 5 times (mainly chest) and died 2 hours after attack

AFTERMATH

  • Islambouli and the other assassins were tried, found guilty, sentenced to death, and executed by firing squad in April 1982
  • Egyptian Government used assassination as an excuse to punish those against the government
  • Hosni Mubarak became Egypts fourth Presideant

Yitzhak Rabin

THE ISRAELI FORMER PRIME MINISTER

FACT FILE

  • Status: Israel's Military Chief of Staff, Politician, Statesman and General. He was the fifth Prime Minister Born: March 1, 1922, in Jerusalem Died: November 4, 1995 in Tel Aviv, Israel Nationality: Israeli

BACKGROUND

  • Joined the Palmach (a Jewish underground commando unit) during World War II
  • 1950s, Rabin ascended Israel's military ladder. By 1964, he had become chief of staff of the army
  • 1968-1973, served as Israel's ambassador to the United States
  • 1974, became Israeli Prime Minister
  • 1977, Rabin was forced to resign from his position
  • 1992, Rabin was re-elected as prime minister

THE ASSASSINATION

  • On November 4, 1995, after speaking at a Tel Aviv peace rally, Rabin was gunned down and killed by Yigal Amir
  • He was an Israeli law student and right-wing extremist who opposed the signing of the Oslo Accords
  • Rabin died on the operating table less than 40 minutes later due to blood loss and a punctured lung

  • Rabin has become a symbol of the Israeli–Palestinian peace process
