CALIFORNIA SEA LION

WHERE CALIFORNIA SEA LIONS ARE FOUND

  • Western coast and islands of North America
  • Vancouver island
  • Southeast Alaska
  • British Columbia
  • Baka California in Mexico

TYPICAL BEHAVIOR

  • They are very social animals
  • They often rest in groups on land or float on the oceans surface
  • They also like to "surf" breaking waves
  • They sometimes are seen "porpoising" (jumping out of water) to speed up their swimming
  • They don't migrate, they stay in the gulf of California year round

WHAT THEY EAT

  • They eat mostly squid
  • They eat lots do different types of fish
  • They eat octopus
  • And they even eat a number of small sharks

REPRODUCTION

  • They breed between May and August
  • They give birth to their pups in May in June
  • The males claim breeding rookeries, and they stay on it as long as possible to increase their chances of breeding
  • The males have to fast, and they rely on a thick layer of fat called blubber, and this usually lasts the male 27 days
  • Most fights occur during this time, and males display vocalizations, head-shaking, and stares to keep their territory

CALIFORNIA SEA LION PHYLA

  • Phylum- Chordata
  • They are from the Animalia kingdom
  • They are from the Mammalia class
  • They are from the Ottariidae family

ENDANGERMENT

  • There are 238,000 California sea lions
  • They are protected on the Marine Mammal protection act, which outlaws hunting, killing, capture, and harassment of the animal
  • So many are affected by malnutrition, cancer, pneumonia, gunshots, and other wounds
  • Many of them are diagnosed with domorcacia toxicosis, which is a condition caused by alga blooms which cause animals to have seizures.
  • Hundreds of sea lions are affected by this condition.
