Flying bombs

  • Hitler used flying bombs against Great Britain
  • V-1 and V-2 ballistic missiles
  • People would try and listen for the missiles coming 
  • V-2 weapons were silent as they approached

Strategic Bombing

  • Damage industrial infrastructure and population
  • Royal Air Force attacked at night
  • The United States attacked during the day
  • British bombed Dresden- killed 135,000

Strategic bombing

  • Firebombs released at night at low altitude were more successful 
  • -than ones during the day at high altitude 
  • British attacked the center of cities
  • U.S. attacked industrial production sites
  • U.S. bombed Tokyo- took out 25% of buildings, killed 100,000

Psychological impact

  • Bombings damaged hopes of victory
  • Effect of losings one's home was intense
  • Made people less happy and more serious (especially kids)
