After the large spike in power it led to a reactor vessel rupture and a series of steam explosions that exposed the graphite moderator to the air causing it to ignite.

The resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the air covering most of pripyat causing the whole town to be evacuated.

Interesting facts

During the meltdown 3 volunteers dove into a radioactive pool to open up a pipe. They died but prevented an explosion 10x the size of Hiroshima

Those cleaning the site could only work safely for 40 seconds even in radiation suits.

The city of Pripyat wasn't told about the disaster until 2 days after the 1st explosion. The world only found out when a radiation detector went off in Sweden.

The radiation was so intense that a firefighter's eyes turned color from brown to blue.

A fungus has been found that actually feeds on radiation. Collected in the reactor walls it breaks down irradiated particles for energy.

For $250 dollars you can book a trip to the exclusion zone. While this is safe the director states that the area will be inhabitable for 20,000 more years.
