  • Jeju island is a geopark that is made up of nine different Geosites
  • These sites were created as a result of volcanic activities several years ago

  • The Geosites are called Mt. Hallasan, Manjanggul Lava Tube, Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone, Seowipo formation , Cheonjiyeon waterfall, The Columnar joints at Jeju jungman , Daepo coast, Sanbangsan Lava dome, Yongmeori Tuff ring and Suweolbong tuff ring

  • It is seen by around 7.7 million people every year
  • It is also used for scientific research because of its natural features and visible volcanic activity from 1.8 million years ago

HALLA MOUNTAIN

  • It is the highest mountain in South Korea
  • It is 1950m tall
  • At the centre of the mountain is Baengnokdam Crater lake

HALLA MOUNTAIN

  • There are many trails leading off the island in different directions
  • The trails allow you to see caves and observe the topography of the island
  • Baengnokdam lake has a depth of 108m and a width of 550m

  • Songshan has intact strata from five geological periods.
  • these range from the Archaeozodic era ....and many more
  • the periods range all the way back from 3.5 million years ago to today

WHY IS IT A GEOPARK?

  • It is a Geopark because of its clearly distributed layers and typical structural features
  • the area got its name of Wudai Tongtang meaning 'five generatons living together' and it is definitely a park which brings all of our world's geological history together in one place
