Reasons for child labour
- Children were cheap
- They had nimble fingers
- They could crawl under machines
- They did not complain
Risks
- Getting caught in machines
- Losing hair or limbs in the machines
- Choking on the gas in the mines
Children were called "scavengers" because they could crawl beneath machines to pick up the scraps.
Small girls were called "piecers" because they mended broken threads
Some children started work at 2 in the morning and stayed below ground for 18 hours.
Children worked in complete darkness in the mines, and they ate dinner in the mines
