1. This mans name is John Muir, he is widely considered the first environmentalist. John Muir was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, glaciologist.
2. This is Rachel Carson, she is considered to be one of the finest nature writer of the Twentieth Century. She wrote many books about conservation, and enlightened many people in the topic. Rachel Carson is recognized as the mother of modern environmentalism.

3. Depicted above is Julia Hill. Julia Hill is one of the most committed environmentalists alive today. She lived in the branches of an ancient redwood tree to prevent it from being cut down. Her tree-sit has henceforth became an international cause célèbre.
4. Here is Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States. He was one of the most active pursuers of wilderness preservation in history. Theodore Roosevelt set aside a plethora (hundreds of millions) of wilderness acres, actively sought soil and water conservation, and created over two-hundred national forests, national monuments, national parks, and wildlife refuges.
5. The person shown here is Gifford Pinchot. He reigned as the 4th Chief of the U.S. Division of Forestry, the 1st head of the United States Forest Service, and as the 28th Governor of Pennsylvania. Gifford Pinchot conducted American forestry services for over a decade.
6. This man's name is Chico Mendes. He sought to preserve the Amazon rainforest, and championed for the human rights of Brazilian peasants and indigenous peoples. Mendes was murdered by cattle ranchers (Darci and Oloci Alves da Silva), whom were angered by his efforts to stop them exploiting land in the Amazon forest, at age forty-four.
7. This is Gaylord Nelson, for a time, he was a United States Senator and governor. His endeavors led to a multitude of environmental laws, such as the Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Gaylord Nelson is the founder of what is commonly referred to as Earth Day.
8. Here is Aldo Leopold. Leopold is sometimes thought to be the godfather of wilderness conservation and of modern ecologists. He was an American author, philosopher, scientist, ecologist, forester, conservationist, and environmentalist. In his lifetime, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Leopold shed light on many wildlife issues.
9. The picture here is a representation of the Alaska Conservation Society. This society is Important because, it is the only public foundation dedicated to conservation in Alaska. The Alaska Conservation Society was the first grassroots environmental conservation group in the state of Alaska.
10. This is Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. This book serves as the catalyst of the modern environmental movement. This book condemns, the usage of pesticide such as the commonly used DDT (now banned). Silent spring brought the dangers and the potential harmfulness of pesticides to light.
11. This is an image that the crew of Apollo 8 took of the Earth. This photo is referred to as "Earthrise". Earthrise became the iconic image of the environmental movement, and thus a contributing force for environmentalism. After seeing this people acknowledged that the Earth is rather fragile and we humans need to take better care of it. This image was a major boost to the Environmental movement.
12. This is an image of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. The crew spilled over 200,000 gallons of oil into the ocean for 11 days straight. The spill led to a plethora of environmental laws nationwide. This oceanic calamity also lead to many reforms in the energy industry.
13. Here is Ohio’s Cuyahoga River fire. This catastrophe heightened the nation's awareness of the environmental and health threats of river pollution. The incident led to a growing movement that caused the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. The resulting media attention led to the creation of the first Earth Day.
14. The image depicted above is a representation of the Club of Rome. The Club of Rome's main focus is that of global problems associated with population and economic growth. They have made many correct predictions about the environment, said predictions have made it possible to assist in helping the Earth before it is too late. The Club of Rome has done a lot of good, and continues to have a large impact on environmentalism to his very day. The Club of Rome remains as an important figure for environmentalists and conservationists alike.
15. Here is a representation of "Friends of the Earth". Friends of the Earth seeks to change the perception of the public, media, and policymakers with policy analysis and advocacy campaigns. This organization brings many environmental issues to the public, and they give the public insight on what needs to be changed. Friends of the Earth advocate for the environment. They are an important addition to the environmentalism movement.
