dentist

  • Dentists diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth
  • I would be required to have a Doctoral or professional degree. All dental specialties require dentists to complete additional training before practicing that specialty. This training is usually a 2- to 4-year residency in a CODA-accredited program related to the specialty, which often culminates in a postdoctoral certificate or master’s degree. Oral and maxillofacial surgery programs typically take 4 to 6 years and may result in candidates earning a joint Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree.
  • The job would require me to have good hand eye coordination and a decent memory for terminology.
  • Dentists typically need a DDS or DMD degree from a dental program that has been accredited by CODA. Most programs require that applicants have at least a bachelor’s degree and have completed certain science courses, such as biology or chemistry. Although no specific undergraduate major is required, programs may prefer applicants who major in a science, such as biology.
  • The projected amount of jobs in dentistry is 155,500 by 2029
  • The occupation is expected to grow by 3 percent from 2019-2029
  • The median annual wage for dentists was $159,200 in May 2019
  • Some dentists have their own business and work alone or with a small staff. Other dentists have partners in their practice. Still others work as associate dentists for established dental practices. Dentists wear masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases. A Dentists’ work schedules vary. Some work evenings and weekends to meet their patients’ needs. Many dentists work less than 40 hours a week, although some work considerably more.
  • I would be interested in this career as my dad is a pediatric dentist so I would have someone to talk to if I required help. I would also be interested in this job as it has the opportunity to make lots of money while also having a flexible schedule.

surgeon

  • Surgeons operate on patients to treat injuries, such as broken bones; diseases, such as cancerous tumors; and deformities, such as cleft palates.
  • Surgeons typically need a bachelor’s degree as well as a degree from a medical school, which takes an additional 4 years to complete. Depending on their specialty, they also need 3 to 9 years in internship and residency programs. Subspecialization includes additional training in a fellowship of 1 to 3 years.
  • In addition to requiring a bachelor’s degree, surgeons typically need either a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. No specific undergraduate major is required to enter an M.D. or D.O. program, but applicants to medical school usually have studied subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • There are as of 2019 752,400 jobs for surgeons (and physicians couldn't find specifically surgeons)
  • The occupation is looking to grow by 4 percent by 2029
  • Wages for physicians and surgeons are among the highest of all occupations, with a median wage equal to or greater than $208,000 per year.
  • Physicians and surgeons work in both clinical and nonclinical settings. Some examples of clinical settings are physicians' offices and hospitals, including academic hospitals associated with residency programs or schools of medicine. Nonclinical settings include government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and insurance companies.
  • In clinical settings, physicians may work as part of a group practice or healthcare organization. These arrangements allow them to coordinate patient care but give them less independence than solo practitioners have.
  • I am interested in becoming a Neurosurgeon to be more specific, or a surgeon that specializes the brain. I am interested for 3 reasons, number one is that it has always seemed as something that would be an occupation I would enjoy. Number two is the high pay, the high pay would allow me to support my family without difficulty. Number three is my dad works as a dentist and as such has a medical backround and would be able to help me learn and understand throughout medical school.
