GEOGRAPHY OF DJIBOUTI
- Capital of Djibouti is Djibouti.
- Djibouti is about the size of New Jersey.
- Djibouti is a republic.
- Most kids cannot read or write until age 15.
- The official language of Djibouti is French.
The French took control of what is now Djibouti and called it French Somalia in 1884. Even though it was territory of the Afars and Issas, it remained part of France until 1977 when it gained Independence, angering Somali Tribes.
Hassan Gouled Aptidon was the first president of an independent Djibouti. He held power for 22 years before stepping aside (due to ill health) for his chosen successor. He was recognized as a peace mediator between neighboring countries of Ethiopia and Somalia.
Djibouti has a population of about 864,000. It's one of the smallest countries in the world with only 8,958 square miles of land, unlike the U.S. Which has 3,794,083 square miles of land.
Djibouti has an infant mortality rate of about 52 deaths per 1,000 live births, and most of them will not be able to read or write until age 15.
Djibouti is pretty stable. Economically, I mean. They recieve income from military outposts that they allow in the country, including a few from America. Their top export is Agricultural products.
Djibouti had it's first suicide bombing on Tuesday, leaving three people dead. The Somali rebel group known as Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for this attack, leaving the Djiboutan Government wondering what will come next from this group of "Rebels".
