deponent verbs

  • deponent verbs "put aside" their active endings
  • you can tell if a verb is a deponent by its principle parts
  • deponent verbs only have 3 principle parts that appear passive
  • the 2nd principle part tells you what conjugation the verb is.
  • even though they look passive, deponent verbs are translated actively

  • ex: regredior, regredi, regressus sum- to return (3rd -io)

3rd and 3rd -io stems

  • to get the 2nd singular, use the 2nd pp minus i plus e and endings
  • from 3rd singular to 2nd plural, add endings to 2nd pp
  • in 3rd plural, drop the i from 2nd pp, add a u and add endings
