Ovarian Cancer
PRESENTATION OUTLINE
30 DIFFERENT TYPES
- 5% Germ Cell (younger to mid)
- 5% Stromal Cell (mixed)
- 95% Epithelial (50 yrs+)
MOST DEADLY TYPE
- 4th leading cause of cancer death in women
MOST COMMON TYPE
- 90 percent of all ovarian cancers are epithelial ovarian carcinomas
MOST ADVANCED TYPE
- Most are not diagnosed until later stages
SURVIVAL RATES
- If diagnosed in early stages 94% survival rate
- Reality is that less than 50% actually survive due to late diagnoses (47.4%)
- National Cancer Institute states only 2.4% of all cancer deaths are due to ovarian cancer (2018)
RISK FACTORS
- Family history of female cancer (ovarian, as well as breast or uterine cancer)
- BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene
- Obese
- Never pregnant
- Endometriosis
- Post menopausal
- Lynch syndrome
- Some fertility and hormonal medications
reduced RISK FACTORS
- Previous pregnancy
- Breast feeding
- Birth control >5years
- Salpingo‐Oophorectomy
- Prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy (in BRCA1/2 positive mutations) reduces risk by 96%
Pelvic exam or RECTO-PELVIC exam
BIOPSY
A small tissue sample is taken from the ovaries through laparoscopy or a needle inserted into the abdomen guided by ultrasound or CT
Imaging
- Transvaginal ultrasound
- MRI
- PET/CT scan
BLOOD TESTS
- Cancer antigen (CA-125)
- Inhibin, estrogen, and testosterone levels, which may be elevated with a stromal cell tumor
- Liver and kidney function tests
Hysterectomy, Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, Omentectomy & tumor debulking.
debulking
- Surgical removal of cancer cells
- May require complete or partial excision of organs in the abdominal/pelvic cavities.
