THE INCAS

INCA EMPIRE

  • The center of the Inca territory: Cuzco, So. Peru
  • Started 1200 C.E
  • When they first started expanding it was 1438
  • attacked one son stayed and fought the Chancas
  • The citizens came back, the Incas were a very powerful

INCA EMPIRE

  • Ideas mostly from Moche and Chimu
  • Both- cities, irrigation methods, and special classes
  • Good roads, created massage systems, thriving

INCA EMPIRE

  • The height was 1500 C.E
  • Stretched north to south, almost length of Andes
  • About 10 million people in Inca rule
  • Today's territory includes five countries
  • They adopted ideas and institutions from other cultures

CLASS STRUCTURE

THE EMPEROR

  • The emperor was at the top of the structure
  • The emperor was called Sapa Inca
  • The Sapa Inca was ruled with complete authority
  • Everyhting in the empire was the Sapa Inca
  • The Sapa Inca had many wives but the main one was called Coya

NOBLES

  • The nobles were below the Sapa Inca they were given gifts
  • The highest rank was Capac Incas descended from Manco Capac
  • Controlling land, coca leaves, and gold; most important in gov.
  • Hahua Incas were not true Incas, some commoners were Hahua Incas
  • Curacas led the conquered, some collected taxes and inspected

COMMONERS

  • Most commoners worked as farmers and herders
  • Commoners had to support the government but didn't practice slavery
  • Women usually weaved, while men built roads
  • The most important crops were usually corn and potatoes
  • Farmers had to give the gov. most of their crops, for storehouses

FAMILY LIFE

  • Everyone as born into allyus, families filled an allyu
  • Allyus grew their own crops to support themselves but didnt own land
  • Curacas ruled the allyus, making sure they paid taxes and just supervise
  • Children learned responsibilty early, most were illeterate
  • At 15 boys undertook tests to become an Inca warrior

MARRIAGE

  • Male commoners married in their 20s, females early as 16
  • When couples agreed to marry they held hands and switched sandals
  • They lived one room houses made of adobe or stone

RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

  • Gods; Illapu, Paca Mama, Mama Cocha, Viracocha, Inti
  • Emperor was descended
  • Spirits dwelled huacas
  • Belief in afterlife, and offering

RELIGIOUS PRACTICES

  • Agricultural, livestock, human, sacrifice
  • Divination, oracle

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • Smallpox spread, emperor, sons
