PARTS OF SPEECH

Nouns

Definition: a noun is any
person, place, or thing

Sentence: The SUNFLOWER is yellow.

Pronouns

Function: pronouns take the place of a noun

Sentence: Jonathan is doing HIS homework. HE wants to get a good grade in all of his classes

"He" and "his" are the pronouns in the sentence above

Verbs

Function: show action or state of being

Sentence: The dog RAN to go get the ball.

"Ran" is the verb in the sentence above

Adjectives

Function: adjectives describe nouns

Sentence: The MASSIVE whale smacked its tail on the water, and soaked the nearby fisherman.

"Massive" is the adjective in the sentence above

Adverbs

Function: adverbs describe verbs, nouns, or other adverbs

Sentence: The cat QUIETLY stalked its prey before it pounced.

"Quietly" is the adverb in the sentence above

Prepositions

Function: prepositions show the relationship between words in a sentence

Sentence: There is a spider web right ABOVE your head!

"Above" is the preposition in the sentence above

Conjunctions

Function: conjunctions connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences

Sentence: I didn't think I would like the movie, BUT I actually really liked it.

"But" is the conjunction in the sentence above

Definition: interjections are exclamations that express strong feelings

Sentence: WOW! That ride was really fun!
