  • Gerontology - the study of the elderly
  • Startup - a new company
  • Social Isolation - the feeling of being cut off from the world

My article is, “Startups Test Smart Devices for Aging Minds and Bodies” from the Chicago Tribune. Here is some information.

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE

  • The startups are developing new ways to help the elderly
  • 8 million people over the age of 65 have social isolation
  • Takes place in companies throughout the world and is in this era

WHY IS THIS NEWSWORTHY?

  • This is our future. We will eventually grow this old
  • Creates a special bond
  • This could lead to more inventions alike these

WHY SHOULD WE CARE?

  • Elderly may die quicker because it causes heart disease
  • They might not invent these tools if they weren’t alive
  • Lose memory and forget things
  • Not many old people are confident with Iphones

ELLIQ AND GRANDPAD

  • ElliQ (the picture) is a device that can hail a taxi, write texts, and remind the elderly if they forget to do something
  • GRANDPAD is like an IPad, but specializes with the elderly

WHY DO I CARE?

  • It is very interesting and cool
  • Grandpa had glaucoma and he can’t see as well
  • All of the features

THE LENSES (CIVIC AND CULTURAL)

I chose the civic lens because the devices can help the citizens in many ways, such as reminding them to do certain things

I chose the cultural lens because now tech is a big trend, and I want the elderly to be involved in this revolution
