- Definition A mobile destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system.

WEATHER CONDITIONS DURING THE STORM

  • During a tornado you can expect to have rain, hail, wind, and different colored sky's,.

CAUSES

  • For a tornado to occur you have to have a cold front and a warm front meet.

LOCATION AND TIMING

  • Most tornadoes in the U.S. occur in a area called tornado alley it stretches from Texas to Minnesota.
  • They occur in this area because warm humid air from the equator meets cool dry air from Canada and the Rocky Mountains.
  • Tornados mostly occur in late spring and summer.
  • They occur during this time of year because of temperature patterns.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • Statistics- Average number of tornado events each year 1,179 Number of people killed 4,795 Average number of people killed per year in a tornado 227 Average Economic Damage per year
  • Stay away from windows, If you are outdoors find a field or ditch away from items that can fly through the air and lie down as flat as you can. Do notstay in a car or try to drive away from a tornado, cars can be flung about by high winds or crushed by debris.

SEVERITY OF THE STROM

  • Watch- a tornado watch is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms called a Supercell that are capable of producing tornadoes
  • Warning-a tornado warning is an alert issued by national weather forecasting agencies to warn the public that severe thunderstorms with tornadoes are imminent or occurring.
  • The tornado scale is EF0 to EF5 0 being the weakest and 5 strongest.

MOORE OKLAHOMA TORNADOES

  • Date- May 20, 2013
  • Location- Moore Oklahoma
  • Facts- A rating of EF-5 has been given to the tornado that affected the Newcastle, south OKC, and Moore areas in McClain and Cleveland counties.
  • 24 people were killed
  • An estimated 2 billion dollars in damage
  • The tornado had a path length of approximately 14 miles and was on the ground for approximately 40 minutes from 2:56 PM - 3.35 PM.
  • The preliminary maximum path width is 1.1 miles.
