THE SYMPTOMS OF BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER

  • Obsessive thoughts about a perceived appearance defects
  • Obsessive and compulsive behaviors related to a perceived appearance defect
  • Major depressive disorder symptoms
  • Social and family withdrawal, social phobia, loneliness and self imposed social isolation.
  • Suicidal ideation, chronic low self-esteem, anxiety possible panic attacks

THE MANY PEOPLE WITH BDD

  • BDD is associated with high rates of hospitalization 48% and high rates of suicidal ideation and attempts
  • BDD is reported in 45-79% of those with BDD, primarily due to history of suicidal ideation past due suicide attempts are reported in 22-24%
  • BDD affects 24% of the general population! it's more common than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

CERTAIN TYPES

  • BDD occurs equally in men and women, or slightly more often among women

TREATMENT FOR BDD

  • Medication.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
