TASK ONE

SOCIAL CLASSES IN THE UNITED STATES

THE UPPER CLASS:
The upper class consists of very wealthy people who may live in a house like the one in the picture.

THE UPPER MIDDLE CLASS:
Members of this class are most likely business men and women. They live a very comfortable life style.

THE LOWER MIDDLE CLASS:
Most people in this class hold jobs such as nursing and management. They have to work hard to keep their comfortable lifestyle.

THE WORKING CLASS:
The members of this class are very hard working people, they often work in factories and deal with hard manual labor.

THE WORKING POOR:
This class consists of people with very low, usually minimum wage, pay. They work hard daily but can still don't make the normal living wage.

THE UNDERCLASSES:
Underclass members are unemployed and in poverty. These people struggle from day to day.

TASK TWO

PROGRAMS FOR POVERTY

FOOD STAMPS:
Food stamps is a program that gives a certain amount of money to families towards food for each month.

DAYCARE ASSISTANCE:
This is a program set up to help pay for a child's (children's) daycare service while parents work.

FREE CLINICS:
Free clinics help families by offering free healthcare for those who cannot afford a regular daycare.

TASK THREE

POVERTY IN THE UNITED STATES

  • poverty rate for 2012 was 15%.
  • In 2011, nearly 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty.
  • More than 30 million children are growing up in poverty.
  • Kids in poverty are more like to drop out of school
  • 1.2 million students that attend public schools in America are homeless.
