He was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. He died on December 14, 1799, Mount Vernon, VA

Early Life

  • George was the son of a wealthy planter.
  • He was brought up on the plantation we now know as Mount Vernon. This is in Virginia.
  • He was the oldest of six children.

Life in the Colonial Period

  • Early America was a very difficult place to live. Many goods were imported from Europe.
  • There was danger from living in the wilderness and from Native Americans.
  • Colonists often had to make the things they needed and grow all their own food.

Washington's Education
George Washington would have been taught at home, which was common at the time he lived. He probably had a tutor and studied things like reading, writing, Latin, Greek and Geometry. He may have been sent to England to finish his education.

Washington's Accomplishments

  • He was a successful gentleman planter.
  • He was the commander of the Continental Army that defeated the British.
  • He was the first president of the United States.

The Importance of George Washington

  • He was our first president.
  • He is often called "The Father of Our Country"
  • He presided over the Constitutional Convention.

Interesting Facts about George Washington

  • George and Martha Washington had no children of their own.
  • Washington probably never chopped down a cherry tree.(that was made up by a writer)
  • His false teeth were not made of wood, but probably of hippopotamus ivory. He had dental problems all his life.
