Lincoln sent General George E. McCellan to take Richmond.
McCellan led 100,000 soldiers on a slow march to Richmond.

Took place on September 17, 1862.
Discovered the Confederates were gonna attack Harpers Ferry.
Was also know as The Battle of Sharpsburg.
Was the bloodiest one-day battle.

BATTLE OF SHILOH
This battle was two days long.
This win helped the Union control part of the Mississippi River valley.
The Union first had to deal with New Orleans in order to control the Mississippi.

SIEGE OF VICKSBURG
Was located on cliffs high above the Mississippi River.
General Grant cut the city off and shelled it repeatetedly.
Lasted about six weeks before hunger forced the Confederate to surrender.

Formed the organization that would become The American Red Cross.
Many women also provided medical care for the soldiers.

THE GETTYSBURG ADRESS
It started on July 1, 1863.
The first day Lee's troops pushed General Meade's soldiers back.
The third day, Lee ordered General George Pickett to charge Cemetery Ridge.
Over half of the Confederates were killed and Lee retreated.
President Lincoln helped dedicate a new cemetery at Gettysburg.
