Economic problems

  • Both the winners and losers came out of WW1 in debt
  • The defeated powers had a hard time paying reparations to the victors
  • WW1 damaged the economics of European countries

Treaty of versailles

  • Italy, Japan, and Germany left unhappy
  • Germany was forced to take responsibility for WW1

Nationalism

  • Nationalism-Extreme form of patriotism
  • Supporters put their nation first before anything else

Rise of dictatorships

  • Dictators came to power in the Soviet Union, Italy, and Germany

Aggression

  • The aggression to take other territories started in the 1930's
  • Germany, Italy, and Japan followed the policy of aggression
  • Countries invaded weak lands that could easily be conquered

  • lasted from 1936-1939
  • Spanish army officers revolted against the government

fAILURE OF APPEASEMENT

  • Germany wanted the region of Bohemia 
  • Czechoslovakia gave the region to Germany 
  • After they received Bohemia, they decided to take the whole country! 

American involvement in war

  • Pearl Harbor caused the US to declare war on Japan
  • Germany and Italy declared war on the US after declaring war on Japan

  • 6 million jews were murdered by nazis
  • Nazis also murdered millions of other races

Role of women

  • Women joined the workforce in large numbers to  make military supplies

Native americans in world war 2

  • About 25,000 native americans were in the army
  •  About 40,000 native americans worked in factories and war industries

Japanese Internment

  • The U.S. government ordered the internment in 1942 after  Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor
  • 62% of the japanese internees were American citizens

uSE of atomic bomb

  • U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
  • Hundreds of thousands of people died instantly after the bomb 

Result of Allied Victory

  • Millions of civilians died
  • Allies punished leaders of the opposing side with war crimes
  • Opposing nations had to pay for the victor's damages

Post-War life in u.s.

  • America becomes a super power
  • Citizens produce 50 million babies in the following 15 years
  • Great Depression ends and economy starts to recover

  • Government wants women to join the workforce

  • U.S. expects every citizen to take a part in the war

  • Known as "Operation Overlord"

Pros/cons of atomic bomb

  • Pro-saved a lot of American lives
  • Con-killed a lot of Japanese civilians
