PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PLANT GROWTH IN THE DIRECTION OF SUNLIGHT

BY: COURTNEY JACKSON, LUCY SEAY, WILL KEMPF

OBJECTIVE
In this experiment, our objective was to find out whether or not, when placed in a box, if a plant would grow towards a hole which provided sunlight. Will the plant move towards the sunlight?

PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS
We though that because sunflowers move towards sunlight, that other plants would do the same thing. We researched and created our hypothesis based on this.

HYPOTHESIS
Our hypothesis was that the plant would make a slight tilt towards the hole with the sunlight.
If the plant is exposed to light in a certain direction, then, the plant will grow in that direction.

VARIABLES
Our independent variable was the light exposure. Our dependent variable was the direction in which the plant grew. The controlled variable was the box, the hole in the box, the soil, and the water.

MATERIALS

  • Box
  • Knife
  • Soil
  • Plants (and cups to hold them)
  • Water

PROCEDURES
In this lab, we preformed seven steps. Our first step was to cut a hole in the box with a knife. Our second step was to put the plant in the box. Step three is to tape the box shut. Step four is to let the plant sit in the box for a few days. Next, observe which direction the plant grew. Record your data and make observations. Finally, communicate your results.

RESULTS AND DATA
After making observations, our group concluded that both of our plants grew towards the light. The stems of the plants slanted towards the hole in the box. We gathered our data by looking at our plants after two days of sitting in sunlight.

CONCLUSIONS
In the end, our group made the conclusion that the plants grew towards the hole in the box. We accepted our hypothesis that the plants would grow towards sunlight because they did. In the end, our data showed that plants will adapt and change their position to meet its needs.
