  • DO NOT speak of Native Americans in the past tense
  • DO NOT equate Indians with "things"
  • DO discuss multiple Indian nations.  Explain that each one isnique.
  • DD discuss how and why the Native Americans defended their territory

  • Be aware of their background, knowledege and experiences
  • Get to know your students as individuals
  • When teaching concepts use examples that are relevant to their lifetstyle
  • Allow them to work in small groups until they feel more comfortable
  • Remember that they may feel shy at first and afraid to ask questions

  • Use visual aids, illustrations, demonstrations when teaching a concept
  • Give them extra time to articulate answers or questions
  • On an individual basis give praise and encouragment
  • Be aware of their body language and remember they many need space.
  • Arrange desks in a circular fashion creating an open environment
