PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HOW DOES WATERPROOF MASCARA WORK?

BY MESHELLE RASAVONG

RELATES TO MY LIFE BECAUSE...

  • I've worn waterproof mascara before
  • I know it does not come off easy
  • Went to a water park and mascara didn't come off
  • Picked this question because I wanted to know more about it

WHAT DO I ALREADY KNOW?

  • It's a struggle to take off
  • Definitely stays on when wet
  • Need to scrub to get off

NOTES

  • Contains petroleum distillate and waxes and oils
  • Hydrophobic molecules
  • Can be dissolved in oil substance(oil based makeup remover)
  • Has silicone and dimethicone copolyol in mascara and both are fat based
  • Water won't mix with product. Oil and water don't mix, leaving mascara good

NOTES CONTINUED

  • Waterproof mascara is called hydrophobic
  • This kind of mascara has stronger hydrogen bonds
  • Non polar

CHEM VOCAB

  • Petroleum Distillate:
  • Products made from crude oil
  • That have been distilled in a refinery
  • Then processed further and purified

CHEM VOCAB

  • Hydrophobic molecules:
  • A property of a substance to repel water
  • Tend to be non polar molecules and group together
  • Examples are oils and fats

CHEM VOCAB

  • Fat based:
  • Waterproof mascara is fat based
  • Helps mascara not to run when crying or when eyes get wet
  • Does not mix with water

HOW HAS THINKING CHANGED?

  • Before I never knew how waterproof mascara worked
  • Now I know it's the wax that keeps the mascara intact and to not come off

RESULT OF THIS

  • Need to buy the right makeup remover
  • to get mascara completely off.
