One of the seminal moments in the open government data movement was the meeting in Sebastopol, CA in 2007. This meeting established a set of principles for open data. While different versions have emerged in subsequent years, this set is a strong description of what is required to make open government data work.

Make public sector information
open, accessible & reusable
Australia's journey began with the Gov 2.0 Task Force in 2009. The task force recommended making public sector information open, accessible, and reusable.
The beta data.gov.au site was developed as part of the task force's work. We were feeling our way forward. Activities such as GovHack grew the community.
Data.gov.au has grown considerably since it was cleaned out and relaunched in 2013. The adoption of APIs using the CKAN interface has made much of the data more readily available.
