The Fugitive Slave Act

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT

  • To make the Compromise of 1850 fair, Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act
  • That means that people in the North weren't allowed to help escaped slaves

The Northerners felt it was wrong and immoral.
They refused to cooperate.

The Fugitive Slave Act, instead of making the Northerners respect the rights of Southern slaveholders, further convinced them slavery was evil

Many anti-slavery people protested and often resorted to violence

Preston Brooks even hit Charles Sumner with a cane because he was pro-slavery.
Civil war broke out in Kansas because of the issue of slavery.
