RELEVANCE TO THE RAFT

  • Robie thought of the Indianapolis as she was stranded in the ocean she then remembered that at least she has a raft and isn’t floating in the ocean without any protection
  • The raft and the uss Indianapolis have very much in common (besides the fact that one actually happened)
  • Robie mentions the USS Indianapolis on pages

U.S.S INDIANAPOLIS TRAGEDY

  • 800 men entered the water but only 316 survived
  • Had to survive about 5 days in the ocean
  • 13 men still alive today
  • Most men died due to burns, dehydration, exhaustion, shark attacks or drowning
  • Known as the highest loss of Navy personal at sea
  • Worst accident in Naval history

WHY IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE RAFT

  • It was included in the story because it is better that Robie has the Raft rather than just having a life jacket like the men on the U.S.S Indianapolis
  • Robie is happy that the situation isn't worse than what it could be
