1 TIMOTHY 1:1-11

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

As I urged you when I went into nMacedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies.

for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound

Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,

for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine

that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

QUALIFIED LEADERS VS. 1-2

Called to be an apostle sent with a mission – Paul’s mission statement

Acts 9:15
Based on the command of God – a military term used to describe the movement of resources agains the enemy –

you and I are resources God uses to defeat the enemy and develop his kingdom of life righteousness against the kingdom of darkness and death…..

Proven track record – my son in the faith – Paul certainly had an established track record for this letter was written towards the end of his life…….

(Illus. That job description ……of Missionaries to France....….they wanted to be sure these they sent over their could do the job…if not then they would need to train them first…)

Close to God – Commissioned by God to go, the object and source of our hope in Him on the way …….hope that will not disappoint.

Grasp of Grace - Paul could say mercy in vs. 2 because he knew where he had come from as he alludes to it later vs. 12-13 ….…

SOUND DOCTRINE

FOCUS ON VS. 3-7

Prevent false teaching
Taught ignorantly vs. 7
Taught confidently
Taught improperly

False teaching should literally be stopped, people wander off into myths and geneologies that lead to speculation, uncertainty,

Myths – fictional stories with divine characters made up to help process life’s events – none of them ever existed, they represented man’s overactive imagination,

Promote godly development of...

Love – selfless God centered - vs. 5 something false teaching does not do

They do not promote
love – selfless, God centered love of the Scriptures –

Pure heart – clean, cleansed

through the blood of Jesus

Good conscience – disease free

Sincere faith – genuine, real,

Application: ………..let’s turnt o Jeremiah 23:9-16 whole context is about what happens when leaders do not pay attention to proper teaching both with their mouths and their lifestyles

FUNCTION

PROPERLY VS. 8-10

Help people deal with their rebellion

Lawbreakers and rebels

Ungodly and sinful

Unholy and irreligious

Help people deal with their sinfulness

Murderers

Adulterers and perverts

Slave traders

Liars and perjurers

notice what happens when sound doctrine functions properly......

It rescues these people from the negative outcomes that always accompany rebellion towards God

Sound Doctrine Transforms

Rebellion into submission
Ungodliness into holiness
Murder into life
Sexual perversion into intimacy
Bondage into freedom
Deception into integrity

Would you say that knowing the truths of Scripture is a helpful thing?

CONFORM

TO THE GOSPEL VS. 11

Conform.....whatever else stands in hostile opposition to the gospel, literally what is in the text and

To conform is to stand in support of and obedience to the gospel ......anyone who lives and teaches according to the gospel

For when the Good News is shared

God is exalted

God is the focus of our model,
glorified - allowing him to have center stage instead of us
blessed – recognizing he is the source of our well being

Gives a personal challenge

Personal challenge – I was entrusted – aor passive –

God chose me to fulfill this….

Gave me the responsibility of caring for sound doctrine and as a result the job of sharing it so others can be rescued....the heart of the meaning of salvation.....

Gospel is good news
