Cities grew and became more appealing to families. Farming declined as towns urbanized.

Negative Effects of Urbanization:
- diseases were more easily spread
- clean water & sanitation was almost unheard of
- there was not enough housing in growing cities

Tenements
Tenements were typically narrow 4 to 5 story buildings with only basic necessities, filled with people. These people were typically blacks or immigrants forced by poverty, prejudice, and sometimes law to live there.

Positive Effects of Urbanization
-offered more cultural and educational opportunities as people lived & worked closer together.
- advanced technology by pushing for higher health standards & safety.

Suburbs
Suburbs were developed outside of large cities in an attempt to give the wealthy a chance to be a short distance from the big city, while still living a somewhat rural life.

As Americans worked and built up the economy, wages were raised and the middle class & upper class began to mingle. This began truly showing America as a place to pursue a better life.
