PRESENTATION OUTLINE

RENE MAGRITTE

By Madeleine Peters

THE HEALER

  • This is one, of a series of sculptures, that Magritte was working on towards the end of his life in 1967.
  • This sculpture has been bronzed to give it an ancient feel, being that the original character appears to be an old man. This also gives history to this contemporary idea.

ARTIST

  • He was born November 21st 1898 in Lessines, Belgium.
  • He was a surrealist artist, which was a popular art movement at the time. His art works were designed to make the observer think about complex things.
  • Possibly his most famous work is "leci n'est pas une pipe"- "this is not at pipe." What he means is that the drawing itself is not a pipe, but merely a representation of a thing and not the thing itself.
