2008B) The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is an culturally driven, coming of age novel that features two young boys, Amir and Hassan, as the center focus of the book. The two boys, originally joined at the hip, are soon forcefully ripped apart by social and ideological differences. At the young age of 12, the boys are forced to chose between courage or fear, fight or flight, violence or silence, and all in the span of a measly few months. This inspiring coming of age novel showcases the trials of growing up in a country thrown into turmoil, and the willpower it takes to continue to thrive in a world that seems pitted against you.

2009B question) Many works of literature deal with political or social issues. Chose a novel or play that focuses on a political or social issue. Then write an essay on which you analyze how the author uses literary elements to explore this issue and explain how the issue contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.

2009B) The Kite Ruuner by Khaled Hosseini uses the political and social issues of the Middle East in 1963 as the driving force behind the central conflict of the novel. Amir and Hassan, the two main characters and protagonists of the novel, are driven apart by the social issues laid before them in 1963 Kabul, Afghanistan. Hassan and Amir are pitted against each other as they face the social implications that come with them being of two completely different castes, while also facing the downfall of the Afghanistan government and the rise of the Taliban. Through historical allusions and cultural diction, Hosseini transports his readers into the social and political issues of tyrannical Kabul.
