The civil war officially began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces bombarded the Union and controlled Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay

In 1865 the national debt stood at $2.7 billion. Just the annual interest on that debt was more than twice our entire national budget in 1860.

Tons of reconstruction that took place until 1865-1877

Including tons of deaths. Between 640,000 and 700,000. The total of union troops that died are 360,000 and over 260,000 Confederate soldiers .

Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865

The last battle was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13, 1865.
