PRESENTATION OUTLINE
BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED
What does this mean?
This beatitude means that those who mourn will be comforted. Those who mourn because of personal sin or failure, will be comforted by admitting those faults and asking for forgiveness. Those who mourn because of loss will be comforted by the good news of the gospel and those around them. In the text, it also says that; "we must have a compassionate heart that moves us to offer support and mercy to those who are suffering."
How have I seen this acted out in history?
This beatitude can be related to many historic events, one event that I see is relatable to this, is 9-11. families and friends of the victims of 9-11 have been mourning since that day, and they are comforted every year. They are comforted by the prayers for the victims, and they are comforted on September 11th, when the nation comes together to remember the victims and honor them.
How have I experienced this in my life?
A somewhat recent example of living this beatitude, was when my mom's dad passed away. My mom was the second closest relative to my grandparents, location wise, since most of her siblings live on the west coast. Because of this and because she was the youngest daughter out of 10 kids, she had a very close relationship with my grandpa. As a result of this relationship, she took his passing the hardest. Since I'm her oldest son, I took it upon myself to help her get through the funeral and make sure that she was doing alright. While it was still hard for me, I knew that I had to be there to comfort her.
