BATTLE OF KINGS MOUNTAIN

  • Date: October 7, 1780
  • Place: border of N. Carolina and S. Carolina, near Blacksburg S. Carolina

U.S. Strategy
1,000 plus militia men pushed Tory forces out of N. Carolina to Kings Mountain.Then Tory forces were stationed up on the mountain, where the Militia charged them.

British Strategy
After being charged, Major Ferguson ordered them to run into Patriots fire. (It was suicidal, didn't want to lose to "Band of Banditti")

IMPORTANT PEOPLE

  • Colonel William Campbell - Virginian commander of colonial forces, he was considered least experienced but most fierce and took fast action
  • Major Patrick Ferguson- Sharpshooter that lead British and Loyalist at Kings Mountain, died in battle due to poor/ rash decisions

IMPACT AND RESULTS

  • Showed southern colonist would not back the British.
  • Also showed militias were forces to be reckoned with.
  • Colonies regained control of the Carolinas.
