AFRICAN COLONIALISM

BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • It was to prevent war over Africa
  • They laid down rules for dividing Africa
  • European nations divided it without regard to where African ethnic groups lived
  • In 1914, only Liberia and Ethiopia remained free of European control

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • Was a period of colonial expansion
  • During the late 19th and early 20th centuries
  • Distinguished by a pursuit of overseas territorial acquisitions
  • Between 1885 and 1914, Britain brought nearly 30% of Africa's population under its control

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • They saw them as possible sources of necessary and cheap raw materials
  • Could be used to maximize popular support at home
  • They used 3 methods of control: Direct colonialism, protectorate arrangement, and spheres of influence
  • Maintained power by providing a Western-style education for colonial leaders

END OF COLONIALISM

  • World war 2 made European countries leave
  • Cold War enemies erupted
  • Gandhi had influence on Africans to not use violence when rebelling
  • African nations made by the Europeans had rivalry tribes who fought

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Economies were torn apart
  • Africa is trying to rebuild its education from hardly anything
  • Political systems were disrupted
  • Change of culture, such as art
